Elche (Elx) is the third most populous city of Land Valencia and the second in the province of Alicante. Aswell, the so called Misteri d’Elx, a sacral-lyrical medieval representation holds the title of “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by Unesco.
Elche is a city full of history. There it was found the bust of the Lady of Elche, an Iberian fourth century BC sculpture, which is one of the most important discoveries of iberian art in Spain.
It was a Roman colony, the former Illici Augusta, which had its development in the site of Alcudia, that it can be visited today. And as a sign of Arab splendor, the Arab Baths and its amazing Palm Groves, which has more than 200,000 registered palm trees.
Inside the palm groves, visit the Municipal Park, where there is a varied selection of palm trees and other botanical species. From there you can take a tourist train that runs through a part of the palm grove and the old town. But the accessibility of its old town is also great to know it by foot; in this journey you find the MAHE, which is the Museum of Archaeology and History of Elche, the Arab baths, the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria, which houses the Misteri d’Elx, the Torre de la Calahorra and Museo de la Festa . Come and visit also a romantic and charming garden: the garden Huerto del Cura, and be seduced by the vision of the imperial palm tree, which has seven branches and Empress Sissi got impressed during his visit to the Garden in 1894.
But Elche is also tradition and craft. It has an Outlet area in Elche Parque Empresarial and has the largest shoe factory in Europe: Craftsman Salvador.
• Mistery Play of Elche
The Mistery Play of Elche is a lyrical medieval drama depicting the Dormition, Assumption into Heaven and Coronation of the Virgin Mary. It is celebrated since the fifteenth century inside the Basilica of Santa Maria, on 14 and 15 August. It is the only medieval play that has been kept alive to this day thanks to a bull of Pope Urban VIII (1632). It is divided into two acts, and is entirely sung. His music has melodies derived from the Gregorian repertoire with Renaissance and baroque compositions and later additions. UNESCO recognized its value as an example of cultural transmission between generations in 2001, declaring it as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
